General Information
A major challenge for faculty engaged in undergraduate biology education reform is leading others to join in reform efforts. What is the vision and role for leaders in undergraduate biology education reform? What are the ingredients of good leadership? How does one motivate colleagues, engage decision makers and transform the biology department?
The purpose of the Leadership Residency is to develop biology faculty to become leaders in:
- Disseminating information
- Building local communities of practice
- Transforming institutions and professional societies
- Sustaining undergraduate biology education reform
To help Biology Scholars develop leadership skills to lead biology education reform effort, we will design the leadership workshops to achieve the following documentable outcomes.
Upon completion of the Leadership Residency, participants will be able to:
- Examine leadership styles and identify their preferred style of leadership
- Learn how to work with various leadership styles and organizational culture
- Identify local and national arenas in which to lead and contribute to biology and/or science education reform
- Identify existing leadership opportunities and determine the rewards or costs of participating; determine whether they align with career goals
- Develop a personal professional development implementation plan
The Leadership Residency will begin in 2010.
The Virtual Residency Model
The Biology Scholars Program utilizes the virtual residency model, a format that combines intensive, face-to-face, multi-day training institutes followed by on-going learning communities using electronic communications. Once accepted into a residency program, Biology Scholars participate in community building activities, thereby increasing the effectiveness of the face-to-face training and follow-up activities.
