The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Institute

Biology Scholars selected for the 2009-2010 Research Residency must attend the SoTL Institute. This four-day intensive institute helps Scholars prepare for the year-long residency. Upon being accepted to the program in March, Scholars receive several pre-institute assignments providing background information in the field to help participants focus on the goals of the Institute and to learn more about one another.

 

WHAT IS “SoTL” AND IS THIS INSTITUTE FOR ME?


The Institute organizers have put together a short bibliography of articles about research and progress made in the field of scholarship and teaching. All potential candidates should review the documents before applying for the Research Residency.

  • An intensive institute to learn how to conduct research in teaching and learning


SoTL Institute Goals

Upon completing the SoTL Institute, participants will:

•Develop a hypothesis to explore student learning in biology
•Design an experiment using their classes to test the hypothesis
•Identify existing resources regularly used to assess student learning
•Understand methods of collecting and interpreting data used to measure student learning

•Understand IRB requirements for conducting research on students

•Identify appropriate venues for publishing their research

Facilitators

Facilitators of the Institute have been recognized as Carnegie Scholars. They include:

Kathy Takayama, Brown University


SoTL Institute Registration Fees

There is a $499.00 registration fee for members of affiliated societies and $599.00 fee for non-members to attend the SoTL Institute. Affiliates include American Society for Microbiology, American Institute of Biological Sciences, American Physiological Society, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, American Society for Cell Biology, Ecological Society of America, and Genetics Society of America. The fee includes meals beginning with dinner July 15 and ending the morning of July 18. Attendees will be responsible for one dinner on their own during the meeting. Applicants must make their own transportation arrangements to Washington, DC. A block of rooms will be reserved for attendees for three nights at a hotel near the ASM Headquarters.  Space is limited.

Please note: If you are applying for travel support from your institution, it is important to remember that the Biology Scholars Program is a year-long commitment and will require travel to the SoTL Institute in Washington, DC and the ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators (ASMCUE) in May 2011. The ASMCUE discounted registration fee is approximately $600.00 - $750.00 and typically includes dormitory housing and meals.

When asked what were the most important aspects of the SoTL Institute, one Scholar reported, “(1) The ability to appropriately frame a question into something that I feel that I can do, (2) the formation of a community of peers that I know I can contact if I have questions or concerns, and (3) hearing from the facilitators and seeing actual examples of the questions that have been asked, data that have been collected, and treatment/analysis of the data collected.”
